Formed in 1997 NRG was the brain child of Leon Kelly & Alison Frost,
The Concept and Idea being that there had been no mainstream duo in the UK chart for a period of time, the last main dance duo was 2 Unlimited back in 1993.
With this idea in mind NRG was born, The name NRG was chosen by Leon and Alison after watching a British Gas advert back in 1997, The advert said Have you got the eNeRGy to survive, and it was ironic that the letters were spelt that way and that the whole meaning and what NRG has become today seems like it was meant to be.
The next step they took was to save up £2000.00 to purchase the basic equipment to enable them to pursue their dream, Having purchased a small set up and having no in roads to any record companies or any experience of where to go they thought the best way forward would be to start touring the pubs & clubs in a hope they would get spotted and seen.
It wasnt long before this happened in 1998 after playing a small pub in Shaw near Oldham called The Colliers Arms, NRG were spotted by pop band N-Trance, who at the time were riding high in the UK charts with hits like Set You Free, Stayin Alive & Many others, The Week later NRG were in Ducie House Recording studios in Manchester working on some ideas that N-Trance had for them.
NRG continued to perform around the pub & club circuit while they waited on tracks and ideas from N-Trance and were soon picking up a huge following as their show had become unique that they were the only boy & girl duo on the market performing up to date modern dance & R & B classics as well as the old skool dance music.
NRG continued to work with N-Trance on the recording side of things and in May 2000 they received their first big break, as featured vocalists on the N-Trance track Shake Ya Body which was a cover of The Jackson 5 Classic, After spending a full 24 hours recording the video in a warehouse in London the track was released in May 2000 and reached number 32 in the UK Top 40.
Following on from this NRG continued to work with N-Trance on more projects such as Boyz Of Summer, Feels Like Im In Love and a remix of the Robbie Williams Classic Angels, however due to N-Trances work commitments and a re release of Set You Free on the horizon it was felt that there wasnt enough time to pursue a solo NRG album and NRG & N-Trance parted ways.
Having got a taste of success and with N-Trance NRG decided that the time was right for pastures new, however they continued working on their show, in 2001 they were picked up by Holiday Giants Haven and town centre bars such as Brannigans, Chicago Rock Cafes & Jumpin Jaks had all seen the potential in NRG and the unique selling point that NRG had as a brand.
In late 2002 NRG started working with Sound Syndicate Productions a small based music company in Manchester, These guys had written the first album for Cleopatra and were having great success in the dance music scene, an avenue were NRG wanted to be, Work started on a new NRG album and tracks like Are You There, Promise, Runner & Time Is a Healer were recorded, After sending these tracks out to all the major record companies the feedback was mixed with people saying they loved the concept of NRG and the vocals however the tracks were not big enough to release a band on the back of them, so it was back to the drawing board.
In 2004 having decided the time was right to change producers and look for a new sound, they decided to take the reigns of their own recording career and decided to finance an idea they had for some time, a remix of the classic 1987 Danny Wilson track Marys Prayer, They recorded the vocals and commissioned a remix of the track by an independent dance producer, With this new track now in hand they decided that maybe the next step forward would be to go to the radio stations and use their NRG touring show to promote the track.
In early 2005 they decided to start work on promoting Marys Prayer and instantly they had amazing success the track was picked up by Radio Stations such as Rock FM, Key 103, Viking FM, Tower FM, Pulse, Galaxy and then amazingly from this the track found its way onto Radio 1 dance show.
At this point it was felt that a visit to the dance labels was the next best place to go and NRG went to see All Around The World Records in Blackburn, who they had been to see back in their N Trance days, All Around The World liked the Marys Prayer track but just didnt think that the track had that killer remix to make it a viable investment and gave positive comments on the vocals but wanted to see a fresh remix, With this in mind NRG set out looking for a new remix of Marys Prayer and consulted several independent dance producers but sadly every mix that came back just didnt work, so in mid 2005 NRG shelved Marys Prayer and moved onto new ideas.
In the meantime although having a set back on the recording side of things, on the performance side NRG as brand grew stronger and stronger winning awards for their shows and picking up brand new City Centre venues such as The Printworks Manchester, More success was to follow as 4 sponsorship deals came their way in the shape of RUSH - A brand new energy drink, ADLIB AUDIO A huge PA company who provide speakers to all the huge tours for all the big name stars, PROLIGHT CONCEPTS The UK biggest disco light distributer and DENON who are worldwide respected as market leaders in DJ Equipment.
With 4 huge companies backing NRG and also more and more venues coming on for their show, they decided to start work again on new tracks, they decided that working on ideas themselves would be the best way to go, in early 2007
NRG recorded Very First Time, You Can Call Me Al & Fire In The Sky.
Using the same technique as before they started work promoting Very First Time which was a hit 1988 for Robin Beck and featured on the Coca Cola Adverts, The track received a great response, however sadly in the music industry whats in the public domain can be at times not the best thing in the world, and NRG fell foul to someone they thought they could trust stealing their idea for their own band and subsequently the track was released by Sunblock who had a smash top ten hit with it, so it was back to the drawing board.
During the promotion of Very First Time, One track that was causing huge reactions with the crowds at NRG shows was You Can Call Me Al, A quirky cover of the Paul Simon classic was a massive hit with audiences up and down the country and it wasnt long before NRG decided that maybe this could be a hit in the making.
In early September 2007 and one late Thursday night in Bolton while NRG were performing, sat in the audience watching them was non other that TV and Radio Presenter Vernon Kay, Vernon was so impressed by what he had seen on the night, he started advising listeners to his Saturday and Sunday Radio 1 show to go and watch NRG, suddenly people were texting and emailing the show telling Vernon that they had seen the show and loved it like he did, Immediately NRG decided that they needed to strike while the iron was hot and sent Vernon a CD to Radio 1 in the hope that he may listen to it.
For the next 8 weeks what followed NRG became a mini feature on Vernons show, he would ask people if they had seen them and advertise where NRG were performing, the combination of all these weeks of promotion resulted in Vernon playing NRG tracks live on Radio 1 to the nation then phoning Leon up for a live interview.
Having received great promotion NRG decided the time was right to contact the record companies again about a possibility of releasing something on the back of the radio 1 promotion, and as Vernon had championed You Can Call Me Al, live to the nation it was felt this could be a great choice to run with, NRG were contacted by Sony who had heard the show and loved the idea of the track but then delayed on the track for a variety of reasons and the idea never took off the ground.
In December 2007 NRG took the decision that it was time to give the recording a rest and concentrate on the NRG Live Show for a while, Having invested in the show for the past 10 years and now amassing a huge sound & lighting rig, they felt the time was right that they should make an assault on the UK Nightclub scene as they had unfortunately outgrown the venues that they were doing and always felt that when the time was right they would make the move.
In December 2007 they decided to take a gamble and went to see Luminar Owned Liquid & Envy Nightclub in Blackburn, during the meeting with the Manger he was sceptical as to what the whole NRG show entailed, In the past all the Luminar Venues would only use Chart Acts for Live Performances, Acts such as Cascada, Ultrabeat to name a few, and it was a bold and brave move by NRG to put themselves in the market place and show that not only could they match what was out there but better it.
Having nothing much to lose Liquid Blackburn took the gamble and it paid off, NRG were a huge hit, Suddenly word got round to all the other north west Luminar Venues that there was a amazing Dance Act called NRG, Lava Ignite Burnley then Made contact offering NRG a monthly residency on their main Friday night, Squires Nightclub In Preston followed, and within 2 months NRG had residencies in all the North West Luminar venues.
In 2008 NRG became the only non signed act to work in the Luminar Nightclub Circuit, and following on from this have now become one of the UKs most sought after Nightclub Acts now working 5 nights a week performing the NRG live show.
Due to the success of their nightclub shows and the fact that each week they now play to an average of 6000 people, they have now started work recording new material to run alongside their nightclub show, and as NRG is now fast becoming a nightclub brand and having amassed a huge fan base they hope that 2009 will see them finally achieve their goals.
NRG HAVE FINALLY ARRIVED
ARE YOU READY !!!!!!!!!!!!
